First, let’s give a big hand to WordPress for winning the top award for running the most hacked websites in 2016!! Congratulations. Oh, and let’s not forget our runners up: in 2nd place…Joomla! In 3rd place…Magento! In 4th place…Drupal! A huge hand to all of these performers in website hacks!
More and more statistics are reported each day on website security risks and website vulnerabilities. What is the one thing that all of these reports have in common you ask? Each report mentions WordPress, Joomla, Magento, and Drupal as having major problems with security issues. Today, WordPress continues to be the most targeted CMS platform on the market. Yes, WordPress does power the majority of websites. However, the problem lies with its available themes, plugins, and out-of-date software. These vulnerabilities are the common issues with all of the major CMS platforms (Joomla, Drupal, Magento).
According to the latest Sucuri Report:
WordPress, Joomla, Magento, and Drupal are the most common hacking targets on the internet today.
Vulnerable software continues to be a problem and is the leading cause of today’s website hacks.
3 in 4 hacked websites are running on WordPress.
56% of hacked WordPress sites were running on an out-of-date-version. The other 45% were not.
97% of hacked Magento sites were running on out-of-date software.
85% of hacked Joomla sites were running on out-of-date software.
81% of hacked Drupal sites were running on out-of-date software.
The leading cause of infection is the exploitation of vulnerabilities in the CMS and in its components (themes & plugins).
CMS platforms that rely heavily on plugins leave sites vulnerable to hacks, have to be updated regularly, and can slow your site down to a crawl.
The bad part to having your website hacked (besides the fact that it’s hacked, most likely down, and someone is stealing yours and your customer information) is over half of the websites that are hacked get blacklisted by let’s say, Google. That results in your website not being found by customers, how it ranks in search engines, and it negatively affects communication with your company, like email.
